Synergico (SYNergie – enERGIe – COnception) was focussed on the development of energy efficient electrical and electronical products. It aimed at the\u00a0development of a systematic approach helping development teams\u00a0to steer the in-use energy performance of a product\u00a0during its development process. The challenge was to find methodological ways to consider in-use energy consumtion as a manageable design criterion rather as an uncontrolled characteristic emerging from diffuse design decisions. This project brought practical\u00a0means for industry to meet newly emerged energy efficiency standards (e.g. Energy Star and ecolabels) and regulations (e.g. EuP Directive).<\/p>\n

Objectives<\/h1>\n
Aim of the project was to allow design teams to:<\/p>\n
    \n
  • systematic\u00a0setting and follow up of optimal products energetic requirements in the product development process<\/li>\n
  • design flagship products consuming up to 80% less energy in the use phase<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
    Contribution<\/h1>\n
    The project\u00a0provided a comprehensive method based on three tools<\/strong>:<\/p>\n
      \n
    • an in-use energy indicator<\/strong> helping:\n
        \n
      • measure the overall in-use energy consumption based on usage scenarios;<\/li>\n
      • offer an increasing precision of estimation,\u00a0from the early development phases to production, thanks to scalable\u00a0calculation rules;<\/li>\n
      • breaking down the energy consumption into the product functional and technical structures in order to identify \u00a0areas\u00a0of improvement;<\/li>\n
      • identify the respective roles of hardware and software in the\u00a0consumption;<\/li>\n
      • assign and follow up objectives.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
      • a set of almost 60\u00a0design guidelines for energy efficiency<\/strong> helping engineers to find technical solutions for decreasing energy consumption that are adapted to:\n
          \n
        • each\u00a0role in the development process (e.g. electronic engineer, software engineer, product architect);<\/li>\n
        • each energy consumption mode of the product;<\/li>\n
        • each phase of the product development process.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
        • a simplified environmental assessment tool<\/strong>\u00a0allowing to check eventual\u00a0environmental impact transfers (e.g. from energy consumption to raw material depletion).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
          Results<\/h1>\n
          Implementations in industry confirmed that the method helps:<\/p>\n
            \n
          • implementing systematic steering of in-use energy efficiency as well as development of flagship products<\/li>\n
          • anticipating upcoming energy standards and regulations;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
            Moreover, steering the energy consumption in design leads to:<\/p>\n
              \n
            • lower <\/span>heat\u00a0<\/span>dissipation in user leading to:<\/span>\n
                \n
              • longer product life;<\/li>\n
              • lower noise emission;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
              • better design of product due to the follow up\u00a0of an additional parameter in the development process;<\/li>\n
